London Design Biennale today announces the appointment of Het Nieuwe Instituut, the Dutch national museum and institute for architecture, design and digital culture, as Artistic Director of the fourth edition of London Design Biennale, taking place from 1-25 June 2023 at Somerset House.

How much energy do you have and need today? This is the starting point of The Energy Show - Sun, Solar and Human Power, a survey exhibition at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam from 3 September 2022 to 5 March 2023. Compiled by curator and designer Matylda Krzykowski, the exhibition revolves entirely around the sun and its design possibilities. It reflects on the visitor's personal energy levels, features dozens of innovative examples of solar technology, and ultimately leads to one key question: what would the world look like if it ran on solar energy?

On Thursday 24 March, Collecting Otherwise gathered in the intimate and familiar setting of Zoom, to host the soft take-off of the second iteration, Post/De/Colonial. This event set the stage for dialogues and perspectives that centre decolonisation within (heritage) institutions and archives as movements of redress and restitution, asking questions such as: What is the role of institutions today in rebuilding heritage? And how do we think about -- and most importantly, enact -- redress?

The Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) has been called in to provide support in drawing up a lighting policy, including a lighting plan for exhibitions and a loan protocol, in order to permanently guarantee the visibility of the Van Doesbug collection.

The collection contains an estimated 300,000 photo prints. The 1923 photogram, 4/i/Lampe Heliokonstruktion 125 Volt by El Lissitzky and Vilmos Húszar, is a special and rather atypical example, which at the same time illustrates the value of the photo collection as a primary source. The work is part of the estate of architect and urban planner Cornelis van Eesteren who was in the De Stijl circle.

As part of the programme, Florian van Zandwijk took the audience on a tour through a number of video conferencing platforms, tracing the context and inspiration for Het Nieuwe Instituut's own Enter.

Het Nieuwe Instituut is proud to announce plans for The Podium: a spectacular platform on institute's roof. The striking pink installation with its imposing external staircase was designed by architects MVRDV and is an extension of the institute's exhibition MVRDVHNI: The Living Archive of a Studio. Open from 1 June to 17 August, The Podium offers a unique opportunity to experience architecture, the city, Museum Park and the institute from a completely new perspective. For the very first time, the roof of the institute will be accessible to visitors.

This project is particularly interested in how more ephemeral artefacts - often part of collections-in-progress that include users and community-based perspectives - can manage their inherent precarity and maintain equality as they move into institutional spaces.
