Takeover MaMA
From 27 August 2023 Nieuwe Instituut will host a foyer screen takeover by MaMA. The takeover features work by the artists working on a virtual residency at MaMA in Rotterdam from 7 August onwards. The residency is in conjunction with the current physical exhibition Portal Park, curated by Maria Mombers. Designed as an amusement park, with a programme that focuses on exploring and questioning the boundaries between the physical and virtual world in an increasingly digital society.

Mombers on Portal Park: : “Our online life is no longer a way to escape from reality, it is our reality. The boundaries between our on - and offline lives are fading and the internet is an extension of our identities.”
About MaMA
MaMA is a platform for visual culture in Rotterdam. MaMA realizes presentations, exhibitions, books and magazines, performances, master classes and events, in its own showroom, online and on location, locally and internationally. MaMA’s program is rooted in youth and popular culture and takes place in those areas where broader cultural developments – of a social, societal, technological or economic nature – become visible within contemporary art practice.
This residency will be focus on topics such as co-creation with AI and virtual worldbuilding. Parallel to these collective moments, all participants will work on a project of their own.
