Zoöp Observations: Crabs-of-the-wood
14 August 2023
As multiple newspapers and television programs already reported, the mushrooms came exceptionally early this year. Whereas they usually appear in the fall, this year they already showed up in early August. The fact is, however, that mushrooms have no seasonal cycle at all: they simply germinate when conditions are right. With July and even the first weeks of August being wetter and cooler than average, conditions for mushrooms were perfect. In the New Garden various mushroom species can be spotted. In the slots of the semi-open concrete driveway a white dapperling (Leugoagaricus leucothites) appeared modestly. I don't think many people noticed.
The real eye-catchers are the golden-yellow crabs-of-the-wood (Laetiporus sulphureus), growing on the upright, dead trunk of a willow tree, that was placed there on the 4th of July. The rains of the past month also made it possible for a few twigs to sprout from the dead trunk, while in an armpit an elder has miraculously come to life.
By the way: crabs-of-the-wood are quite edible, provided they are not too old. The taste, but especially the thread-like structure, are reminiscent of chicken meat. That is why this mushroom has the nickname chicken-of-the-woods. White dapperlings, on the contrary, are slightly poisonous, and might cause indigestion in some people.
Artist Frank Bruggeman, in collaboration with researcher and author Peter Zwaal, describes what he sees happening in The New Garden since spring 2022, when the Nieuwe Instituut officially became a zoop.
