In this edition of the Jaap Bakema Study Centre, we will reflect on the ambiguous nature of modern architecture, particularly in relation to exploitative colonial practices that stand in stark contrast to the progressive ideals of modernism.

The second edition of The Queer Salon explores the hidden histories of diverse LGBTIQ+ individuals and communities.

The Jaap Bakema Study Centre conference explores ethnography's influence on architecture. Since the 19th century, architects have used ethnography - a form of research in which immersion in a community allows observers to closely study behaviours and interactions - to develop the discipline and reshape the architect's social role.

VIII. The Observers Observed  

What sort of tacit, embodied and social knowledge can we find in an archive? How can we activate that knowledge? What even constitutes an archive in architecture? And is there a craft to archiving itself? Join us as we discuss these questions and more with Albena Yaneva, who will present research on the tacit knowledge of archiving from her recent book _Crafting History: Archiving and the Quest for Architectural Legacy._

Archival Ways of Knowing

The Queer Salon series aims to connect institutionalised, "insider" heritage spaces, such as national archives and collections, with the "outsider" heritage spaces of "critical visitors", in order to open up and transform the practices of institutionalisation and canonisation.

As part of the programme for the Jaap Bakema Study Centre conference, which aims to critically explore the interplay between architecture and digital culture since the 1970s, Armin Linke discusses a selection of projects with Georg Vrachliotis and Dirk van den Heuvel. This presentation reflects on the current state of global technological landscapes, from media archives and data archaeology to control rooms and server farms. 

Data Landscapes

This year's Jaap Bakema Study Centre conference aims to critically explore the interplay between architecture and digital culture since the 1970s. How has the emergent data society materialised in architecture? What new typologies have been developed? And what role did architecture play in the emerging discussion about artificial intelligence?

The Jaap Bakema Study Centre is a collaborative project of the Nieuwe Instituut and the Faculty of Architecture of TU Delft. It initiates and undertakes research projects that result in exhibitions, publications, and public events.
