About Architectural Archives: Barry Bergdoll

What is an architectural archive, and what could it become? Barry Bergdoll, Professor of Art History at Columbia University and former Chief Curator of Architecture at MoMA, explores these questions using items selected from the Nieuwe Instituut’s collection.

5 March 2026 15:00 - 17:00

At the Re-Centre, Barry Bergdoll will join Sofie De Caigny, Head of Collection at the Nieuwe Instituut, and Dirk van den Heuvel, Head of the Jaap Bakema Study Centre, for a discussion.

Taking the National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning as a starting point, they will explore what constitutes an architectural archive, how it functions, and the changes and challenges that it faces. Bergdoll has selected archival materials relating to the work of Johannes Duiker, including the Cineac cinema in Amsterdam and the Zonnestraal sanatorium in Hilversum. These materials will be on display at the Re-Centre prior to the discussion.
