After Summer School: Monday

During the After Summer School, over 20 public classes will take place throughout the city, presenting Rotterdam as a hub for knowledge that deserves to be recognised and included in the city development. We kick off the week with classes by Rosi Braidotti, Independent School for the City, WaterSchool, a Zoöp Detour, and more.

30 September 2024 08:30 - 20:00

The opening day of this first edition of the After Summer School is a moment to explore what posthuman knowledge and ways of working are. How can we change the city by looking, listening, writing, archiving, collaborating, activating, researching, designing, and walking differently? We start with activities that allow us to perceive knowledge from other-than-human perspectives.

After Summer School 2024 Opening Lecture (10:30-12:30)

  • By the Nieuwe Instituut x Rosi Braidotti
  • Location: Auditorium, Nieuwe Instituut
  • Language: English

Join us in the Auditorium of the Nieuwe Instituut as we kick off the very first After Summer School with a lecture by the post-humanist philosopher Rosi Braidotti. As the initiator and inspiration behind the New Academy, Braidotti will present the vision of a city-based curriculum for change and its transformative potential. Join us in imagining how a local platform for learning to tackle complex challenges together might look.

This is Tomorrow (14:00-15:30)

  • By Mike Emmerik, Wouter Vanstiphout
  • Location: Independent School for the City
  • Language: English

Independent School for the City, a Rotterdam-based ‘playground for all urban thinkers, doers and designers’, will guide us through its activities and methods. Together with Mike Emmerik and Wouter Vanstiphout, we will zoom in on the school’s central themes: Climate Change, Superdiversity and the Right to the City. These are issues that the school sees as fundamental to the future development of Rotterdam as a port city in one of the world’s largest and most industrialised delta areas, where more than 170 nationalities live together.

Zoöp Detour by Maartje (16:00-17:00)

  • By Maartje de Winter
  • Location: The New Garden, Nieuwe Instituut
  • Language: Dutch (TBD)

Imagine you were an insect. Would the Nieuwe Instituut and its surroundings be a good place to live? What would be the dangers? How can humans and non-humans work together to protect the needs of all life? During this Zoöp Detour, hosted by designer Maartje de Winter, you will explore other-than-human lifeforms and immerse yourself in the nature around the Nieuwe Instituut from the perspective of an insect. The Detours of the Nieuwe Instituut are walks led from the personal perspective of a Detour Guide, based on their own expertise. They take you on an experience that is more than just looking.

Water Park Walk (18:30-22:00)

  • By WaterSchool x Stichting het Park
  • Location: Het Park (starting at the Noorse Zeemanskerk, Westzeedijk 300, Rotterdam)
  • Language: English (TBD)

Explore Het Park at the Euromast through the eyes of four unique characters: the Water Guardian, the Wellness Specialist, the Flow Architect and the Transhuman Ambassador. WaterSchool, a project by Studio Makkink & Bey, takes you on a journey through the past and present, imagining future possibilities for living with water in the Rotterdam Delta. During the walk, you will collect, create, and share your observations, to serve as a catalyst for future change. This walk, supported by the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails project, will also take place on Wednesday.

Insight of the Day podcast (all day)

  • By Stine Jensen
  • Location: Nieuwe Instituut
  • Language: English/Dutch

In the chaotic times in which we live, philosophy often fulfils the role that religion used to play. Without religion, the wisdom of others can provide guidance on how to think and how to live. In the daily podcast Zin van de Dag ('Insight of the Day', philosopher, writer and podcaster Stine Jensen offers new wisdom, based on a particular insight into life. This special series, launched during the After Summer School, features episodes with philosopher Rosi Braidotti and Francien van Westrenen, head of Agency at the Nieuwe Instituut. Visit the listening booth at the Nieuwe Instituut and have a listen.
