Bauhaus of the Seas Sails
Nieuwe Instituut participated in the Delta pilot of Bauhaus of the Seas Sails (BoSS), a European project (2022-2025) that focused on the most critically endangered shared space in the EU and the world: seas, oceans and other water bodies. The results of the Delta pilot have been documented in an Impact Report published in 2026.
Oceans face numerous challenges, from plastic pollution to rising sea levels. Finding solutions to the various environmental problems is a real challenge. This can be done by mobilising cities & communities close to water. With an interdisciplinary, intergenerational and interspecific approach, this meaningful multi-year project aims to instigate change.
New European Bauhaus
Bauhaus of the Seas Sails is part of the New European Bauhaus (NEB), which aims at raising a movement based on sustainability, social inclusion, and beauty. The project departs from the realization that the climate crisis is a global, complex 'hyperobject'. NEB intends to foster ethical and aesthetic regenerative developments.
Nieuwe Instituut is partner in the the Delta pilot, which comprises two distinct locations: Grenspark Groot Saeftinghe, representing a rural landscape, and the Rotterdam area, embodying urban characteristics. Both environments have social and spatial challenges that come with a fast-changing climate and political realities that impact on their social fabric. Within the Delta pilot, Nieuwe Instituut works together with TU Delft, Border Park Groot Saeftinghe and Vereniging Deltametropool.
After Summer School
The After Summer School is a Rotterdam-based programme where a wide variety of knowledge producers teach their methods and share knowledge through a series of public classes. One of the contributors to the programme of the After Summer School 2024 was Studio Makkink & Bey, whose involvement was made possible within the framework of Bauhaus of the Seas Sails. The studio’s WaterSchool project hosted a walk in and around Rotterdam’s Het Park, imagining future possibilities for living with water in the Rotterdam Delta. Read more about the programme here.
Report
In April 2026, the Delta Impact Report was published: Impact of Future Tidal Architectures, Living with Water and Zoöp in the Flemish Dutch Delta. The report, prepared by TU Delft in collaboration with the Delta pilot partners (including Klaas Kuitenbrouwer, Wietske Nutma and Francien van Westrenen of the Nieuwe Instituut) documents the results and impact of the three 'drops' tested in Rotterdam and Grenspark Groot Saeftinghe.
