After Summer School: Thursday

During the After Summer School, over 20 public classes will take place throughout the city, presenting Rotterdam as a hub for knowledge that deserves to be recognised and included in the city development. Join classes by OMI, Huis van de Toekomst, Zoöp, Stichting Wijkcollectie, Ursula Biemann, and more on this ‘Knowledge’-themed Thursday.

3 October 2024 08:00 - 21:00

Cities can be seen as living archives of collective knowledge practices. On the Thursday of the After Summer School, we engage with those who embrace, explore and design with ‘alternative’ knowledges. Many of them engage with cultural meanings found in everyday life: in food, religion, art and design.

The Never-Ending Story (10:00-12:30)

  • By OMI
  • Location: OMI, Schietbaanstraat 21
  • Language: English

There are all kinds of stories to be discovered in the city: every resident has their own perspective, experiences and desires. Come with us to the Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam – where many opinions, visions and plans for the public space come together. During this excursion, you will explore the past, present and possible future of the square with OMI, architect and researcher Claudia Kromrei (University of Bremen), and invited guests.

Zoöp for the Regeneration of Public Spaces (10:00-14:00)

  • By Klaas Kuitenbrouwer (Zoöp)
  • Location: Buitenplaats Brienenoord
  • Language: Dutch

Explore the possibilities of the Zoöp model together with Klaas Kuitenbrouwer, researcher and driving force behind the development of the model. The Zoöp is based on cooperation between human and other-than-human life, which safeguards the interests of zoë (Greek for all ‘life’). An organisation that becomes a Zoöp recognises the voices and interests of other-than-human life in its policy-making. Find out how a Zoöp works and explore together how Zoöps can contribute to the regeneration of public spaces in Rotterdam.

People-Powered Transition (14:00-16:30)

  • By Linda Vlassenrood (Transition-Scapes) x Huis van de Toekomst
  • Location: Huis van de Toekomst, Jan Kobellstraat 56A, 3026 SV Rotterdam
  • Language: Dutch

This year, 14 houses and courtyards in the Rotterdam district of Bospolder-Tussendijken will become a House of the Future – a collective household based on community power. Through baking bread together, insulating homes with old clothes, creating a charging garden for people and animals, gas-free cooking, yoga, massages and bodywork, a People Power Plant will be created, based on human energy as its main energy source. This workshop, developed by Transition-Scapes, a research group at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, will focus on testing scenarios of how such local energy and resources can make a community grow.

Story Trail Oude Noorden (17:00-19:00)

  • By Stichting Wijkcollectie
  • Location: Huis van de Wijk Het Klooster, Ruivenstraat 81
  • Language: Dutch

Rotterdam’s Oude Noorden neighbourhood was visited by a ‘learning circus’: a circus with no acrobats, jugglers or clowns, but with stories about the area. These stories were collected and are stored as the intangible heritage of the neighbourhood. During this Story Trail through Oude Noorden, you will try a new way of experiencing the collected stories and learn how technology can help us to share them. This event is organised by Stichting Wijkcollectie, a Rotterdam-based platform that makes visible stories that contribute to local change.

An Evening With: Ursula Biemann (19:30-21:00)

  • By Ursula Biemann and Nieuwe Instituut
  • Location: Auditorium, Nieuwe Instituut
  • Language: English

Swiss video artist Ursula Biemann will guide us through her artistic practice, which takes a systemic approach to environmental conditions, linking a theoretical and planetary macro-level with the micro-politics on the ground. Biemann conducts fieldwork in remote places – from the Arctic region to the Amazon rainforest – and on many of these field trips she encounters Indigenous communities and their ways of thinking about this vital relationship. The evening will focus on these environmental projects and will be moderated by philosopher Rosi Braidotti. More information and tickets for An Evening With: Ursula Biemann can be found here.
