International Visitors Programme

2021

Every year, dozens of international architecture, design, fashion and digital culture professionals visit the Netherlands at Het Nieuwe Instituut's invitation to experience Dutch design and its multidisciplinary way of working. The International Visitors Programme promotes international dialogue, cultural exchange, market expansion and the growth of the international professional network.

This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated restrictions on international travel, a number of visits took place digitally. On this page you can read which international guests were welcomed by, Het Nieuwe Instituut in 2021, both physically and digitally:

Godofredo Pereira (CL), Pedro Alonso (CL), Emily Martin (US) (January 2021)

As part of the Lithium research and exhibition project, Het Nieuwe Instituut invited architects and researchers Godofredo Pereira and Pedro Alonso and anthropologist Emily Martin to take part in a series of online programmes on the mineral lithium and how it relates to forms of burn-out on a planetary, human and technological scale. The meetings were organised in the context of Thursday Night Live! Due to the coronavirus regulations in force at the time, these TNL! activities were streamed.

Jason Wee (US), Astria Suparak (US) (January 2021)

Thanks to a contribution to the Open Call for visitors programmes, the festival, exhibition and multidisciplinary online and offline platform Other Futures could put together and publish an interview in which artistic director Brigitte van der Sande talks with artist Jason Wee about his installation Masterplan.

Valencia James (Volumetric Performance Toolbox) (BB), Archivo Auxiliar (MX), Jason King (US), GLOR1A (UK) en Alpha Rats (JP) (May 2021)

In collaboration with Rewire Festival, Het Nieuwe Instituut presented _For the Record: In Another Setting_ This event discussed design tactics for collective music experiences in and after the pandemic. Contributions from Alpha Rats (JP), Archivo Auxiliar (MX), GLOR1A (UK), Volumetric Performance Toolkit (US) and Jason King (US) were made possible with support from the International Visitors Programme.

Vasco Mendes, Maria Reis, Sara Graça, Sreya (PT) (July 2021)

In july 2021, Het Nieuwe Instituut joined the Porto Design Biennale 2021 (PDB'21) with For the Record: The Politics of Design in Music Video. This two-day programme of lectures and workshops reflected on recent Portuguese music videos and addressed various themes relating to the role of design in music video productions. Participating artists in this programma included Vasco Mendes (director of music video's and films), Maria Reis (artist and musician), Sara Graça (artist and designer), and Sreya (artist and musician).

Athi-Patra Ruga (SA) (September/October 2021)

During Afrovibes Festival 2021, Athi-Patra Ruga presented his new video performance Over The Rainbow online at various locations. For both physical visitors and through live streams, his work was shown at the Compagnietheater and De Balie in Amsterdam, and in Rotterdam at Theater Zuidplein and twice at De Kunsthal. During several of these presentations, Athi-Patra Ruga interacted online with audiences and artists.

New Order of Fashion, Matthew Needham (UK) (October 2021)

During Dutch Design Week, the organisation invited New Order of Fashion (NOoF) designer Matthew Needham for an in-depth NOoF Talk and to inspire a new generation of NOoF talents as a mentor in the NOoF LAB. The New Order of Fashion Foundation recently worked closely with Needham on the Long Live Fashion exhibition in the Textielmuseum, which was on display from 25 September 2021 to 27 March 2022.

During Dutch Design Week 2021, Nieuwe Instituut organised a programme for an international delegation from Spain, Belgium and Turkey to tie in with their visit to Eindhoven for the design week. The programme, for which the Nieuwe Instituut collaborated with Dutch Culture, The Dutch Embassy in Brussels and the Spanish Embassy in Madrid, consisted of visits to the Design Museum Den Bosch, the Textile Museum in Tilburg, Nieuwe Instituut and the new Depot of Museum Boijmans. Studio visits were also made in Rotterdam to Studio Makkink & Bey, Studio Wieki Somers, Morph.love collective and Sabine Marcelis.

Sean Cole (US) (November 2021)

Sean Cole is an American journalist, poet and producer of the renowned This American Life podcast series. In 2021, he was invited by Podcastnetwerk, a Dutch foundation dedicated to fostering podcast culture in the Netherlands, for a keynote on the captivating power of audio during the opening night of the annual Podcastfestival in Groningen. He also hosted a masterclass on interviewing people who have something to hide as part of the festival's affiliated conference in Amsterdam. The keynote in Groningen is available for playback as a podcast on the feed of the Podcastfestival 2021.

Katerina Gregos (GR) (November 2021)

Katerina Gregos is a Greek curator, lecturer and writer currently based in Brussels. In summer 2021, she became artistic director of the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) in Athens, er hometown. Her curatorial practice has consistently explored the relationship between art, society and politics with a particular focus on questions of democracy, human rights, economy, ecology, crisis and changing global production chains.

Raphael Bastide (FR), Rifke Sadlier (UK), Ambika Joshi (IN) (November 2021)

Creative Coding Utrecht, a platform that stimulates digital creativity and creative coding as artistic practice, organised a two-day Symposium on Creative Coding in cooperation with designer Vera van de Seyp. The hybrid event, which took place at Amsterdam's Veem House for Performance in November 2021, consisted of workshops, interviews, demos and artist talks.

Alejandra Celedón Förster

Alejandra Celedón Förster (CH) (November 2021)

In November, architect and curator Alejandra Celedón Förster visited Rotterdam for several days and met with several parties involved in architecture in Rotterdam, and at TU Delft and the research department at Het Nieuwe Instituut. She visted the Boijmans Depot, Panorama Mestdag, the Kunstmuseum and the collection and exhibitions at Het Nieuwe Instituut.

On 26 november 2021, Stichting NDSM together with Pakhuis de Zwijger hosted an online discussion about inclusive city design with international guests Amina Hassen from Blackspace Collective and Joseph Henry and Pooja Agrawal from Sound Advice.

Jaap Bakema Study Centre — Eeva Liisa Pelkonen (December 2021)

In December 2021, Jaap Bakema Study Centre hosted Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen at Het Nieuwe Instituut. She gave a public seminar around new developments in exhibitions. The programme was accompanied with presentation by two TACK PhD students’ on-going projects undertaken at Het Nieuwe Instituut under the supervision of Dirk van den Heuvel (Het Nieuwe Instituut and TU Delft).

Collecting Otherwise (digital visit)

The International Visitors Programme supported the contribution of Renan Laru-An (PH), Jos Boys (UK), Isola Tong (PH), Alfred Marasigan (PH),Czar Kristoff (PH) and Robin Hartanto (ID) for Het Nieuwe Instituut's Collecting Otherwise research project.  Collecting Otherwise, which started in 2020, is one of the research projects that Het Nieuwe Instituut is developing as part of the Rethinking the Collection initiative, as part of the framework of Disclosing Architecture.

Autonomy Lab (hybrid, whole of 2021)

For Autonomy Lab, a research project by the Willem de Kooning Academy, a large number of collectives from different parts of the world collaborated remotely throughout 2021: Display / Distribute (Hong Kong), SMRC 8a (Social Movement Resource Center) (Hong Kong), BananSkolen / Banana School (Denmark), Amigas Collective (Colombia), Bureau of Care (Greece), Arahmaiani (Indonesia), and Constant VZW (Brussels).
