International Visitors Programme
Every year, dozens of international architecture, design, fashion and digital culture professionals visit the Netherlands at Het Nieuwe Instituut's invitation to experience Dutch design and its multidisciplinary way of working. The International Visitors Programme promotes international dialogue, cultural exchange, market expansion and the growth of the international professional network.
This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated restrictions on international travel, a number of visits took place digitally. On this page you can read which international guests were welcomed by, Het Nieuwe Instituut in 2020, both physically and digitally:
Angela Chan (UK)
January 2020
Angela Chan, founder of online platform Worm: art+ecology, visited the Netherlands at the invitation of MAMA through the Open Call of the International Visitor Programme.
Motovila (SI)
January 2020
From 19 to 23 January, 12 professionals from the cultural and creative sector in Slovenia visited the Netherlands. The visit was organised by Het Nieuwe Instituut in collaboration with Motovila, Centre for the Promotion of Cooperation in the Cultural and Creative Sectors, and DutchCulture.
Carlos Nazareno (PH)
February 2020
Carlos Nazareno, interactive media specialist and digital artist, came to Het Nieuwe Instituut in February 2020 for an expert meeting and a visit to the National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning. The visit was realised in collaboration with XPUB, the Piet Zwart Institute's experimental publishing programme.
Sofiane Si Merabet (MA) & Nouha Ben Yebdri (AE)
January/February 2020
Sofiane Si Merabet and Nouha Ben Yebdri, part of the curatorial team of the media and digital art festival New Radicalism, visited the Netherlands from 31 January to 10 February 2020, through the Open Call of the International Visitor Programme.
Anja Kanngieser (AU)
February 2020
Sound artist and political geographer Anja Kanngieser visited the Netherlands from 19 to 26 February 2020, at the invitation of Sonic Acts, as part of the Open Call of the International Visitor Programme. During the festival (on 22 February) Kanngieser gave the lecture Listening to Ecocide, part of the conference Magical Thinking: Towards a Future Worth Living.
Tega Brain (AU)
September 2020
Tega Brain, assistant professor of Integrated Digital Media at New York University, gave an online artist talk during Fiber Festival on 25 September. On 30 October, Brain gave a talk that was part of the Vertical Atlas - world.orbit workshop series, organised by Het Nieuwe Instituut.
Siona Houthuys (BE) and Josh Rivers (UK)
September 2020
Siona Houthuys and Josh Rivers were guests at the Podcast Festival 2020 and visited the Netherlands through the open call of the International Visitors Programme of Het Nieuwe Instituut. On 18 September, Siona Houthuys gave a workshop and on 19 September, Josh Rivers presented a live show of his podcast Busy Being Black.
Julia Watson (UK)
October 2020
Julia Watson, anthropologist, environmental activist and landscape designer, was part of Impakt Festival 2020 through the Open Call of the International Visitor Programme. She was part of the panel discussion Whole Earth Revision and in had a conversation with writer and media theorist Douglas Ruskkoff on her new book, LO-TEK: Design by Radical Indigenism.
