Practicalities

Re-Centre is freely accessible. There is no need to make an appointment to use the library collection, for consulting archives we ask you to reserve a place in advance. Read more about the Re-Centre's facilities and services, making an appointment and requesting archive material.

Adjusted opening hours and limited services at the Re-Centre, 26 September to 24 October

Please note that the Re-Centre will be subject to adjusted opening times and limited services during this period. These changes are due to an event set-up on 26 September and work on the depot building’s climate control system from 29 September to 24 October.

Re-Centre opening hours

Opening hours, Friday 26 September Open from 10:00 to 17:00. Services will be suspended from 13:00 due to an event set-up.

Opening hours, week 40

  • Open from Tuesday 30 September to Friday 3 October, from 10:00 to 17:00

Opening hours for week 41

  • Open from Thursday 9 October to Sunday 12 October, from 10:00 to 17:00.

Opening hours, week 42

  • Open from Tuesday, 14 October to Friday 17 October, from 10:00 to 17:00. Please note that archive materials cannot be retrieved from storage on Tuesday 14 October. Books can be retrieved from the open shelves in the Re-Centre, but not from storage.

Opening hours, week 43

  • Open from Tuesday 21 October to Friday 24 October, from 10:00 to 17:00.

Depot requests

Access to the depot will be limited from weeks 40 to 43. This means that requests for archive and library materials must be submitted one week in advance.

  • For archive requests in week 40, the deadline is Wednesday 24 September.
  • For archive requests in week 41, the deadline is Wednesday 1 October.
  • For archive requests in week 42, the deadline is Wednesday 8 October.
  • For archive requests in week 43, the deadline is Wednesday 15 October.
  • For library requests from the depot in weeks 40 and 41, the deadline is also Wednesday 24 September.
  • For library requests from the depot in week 42, the deadline is Wednesday 8 October.
  • For library requests in week 43, the deadline is Wednesday 15 October.

Image requests

Image requests cannot be processed from 29 September to 24 October. Please allow extra time for delivery when reproduction services resume.

Consulting the archives

  • Consulting the archive is by appointment only.
  • Appointments must be scheduled during our opening hours and specify a date and time slot: From Tuesday to Friday: 10am – 5pm (Time slots: 10am – 2pm; 2pm – 5pm.) You may reserve several time slots if needed.
  • In the Re-Centre we have four research places for consulting archive material per time slot. Two people working on the same research project can use one research place.

Making an appointment

  • Please make your reservation at least 48 hours in advance. We would like to receive an application for Tuesday at least Thursday the week before. For the archive collection, you can do this by sending an email with the inventory numbers you want to view to collection@nieuweinstituut.nl. You can choose archive material in our inventory via our Search Portal.
  • In addition to the documents you want to view, you should include the following details in your email: desired date of visit and a second option, desired time slot(s) and any other comments.
  • You will receive a confirmation of your appointment. Without this confirmation, your reservation is not valid.
  • Making an appointment in advance for consulting the library collection is possible, but not necessary.

Registration

Re-Centre is freely accessible. To consult archive material, order books from the depot or speak to a member of staff, you will need to complete a one-time registration form. It is necessary to show valid proof of identity when you register.

Reserving archive materials

The collection of the Nieuwe Instituut can be perused online via the Search Portal. An online reservation is required in order to be able to do research in the archives. To be able to process your application in time, we ask that you submit your reservation at least 48 hours in advance by clicking on the reservation button in the Search Portal or by sending an e-mail to collection@nieuweinstituut.nl. The reservation buttons can be found under the description of the inventory numbers in the archive. An inventory number is the four-letter archive code + a letter and/or number combination. For example BERL44.3 or BROX7t2453

Reservations for Tuesday should be submitted at the latest by the Thursday of the week before. If we have a large volume of reservations, we may ask that you schedule your visit for another day.

Consulting the library collection

The library collection is not available for loan and can only be consulted on site. You don't need to submit a request in advance to view the collection. Publications that are kept in the depot will be collected for you to peruse at the Re-Centre, after you complete an application form.

Reproductions

There are various possibilities to reproduce material from the collections of the Nieuwe Instituut. In the Re-Centre, you can copy, scan and (digitally) photograph documents yourself. However, archival material can only be copied by making a request to our Reproduction Service.

If you want to scan pages from our library collection you'll be able to use the book scanners available. The files can be sent to the computers in the Re-Centre or saved on a USB stick.

Groups

Groups are welcome at the Re-Centre. However, we do ask you to register a group (more than two people) in advance by mailing collection@nieuweinstituut.nl. The general rules for reserving archival materials apply.
