Memory of the Designed Landscape
Memory of the Designed Landscape works with concrete case studies of different archives and archival approaches. The main aim of the network is to support the sustainable preservation of garden and landscape architecture archives. Case studies are essential for developing knowledge about the assessment and selection of archives and for formulating preservation solutions with practical and financial implications.
Each case has its own scope and content, a particular network and type of archival material. Each one therefore addresses specific aspects of the material, methodological and strategic aspects of the archival issue.
The Framework Programme examined the first four case studies: Bureau B+B, Bureau Vallen-Taken, Zuiderpark and Room for the River. They represent the variety of archives that characterise the landscape: a still-active office with a living archive, a disbanded office with a fragmented and disappearing archive, a municipal archive and the archive of a spatial project spanning several provinces. In each case, we worked with a team of independent researchers to find possible solutions for acquisition, collection and communication. The team consisted of Marlies Brinkhuijsen, Imke van Hellemondt, Andrea Prins and Lara Voerman.
In 2025, we will select and research three or four new case studies. The evaluation methodology for garden and landscape archives developed during the 2022-2024 Framework Programme will be used to gain an overall understanding of the situation and value of an archive.
