What if the right to affordable housing, working and living rather than property rights were made the priority of urban transformation? Since the 1960s squatters, with this idea in mind, have made an important contribution to the development of the city, appropriating parts of the city and changing it from the inside out. This practice is explored in the exhibition Architecture of Appropriation, on show from 27 January until 25 June 2017.

How deceptive or authentic is surface design? With the exhibition Designing the Surface, on view from 27 January 2017, Het Nieuwe Instituut is continuing a series of exhibitions about materials. Following earlier exhibitions on wood, plastics and glass, Designing the Surface focuses on the final coatings applied to materials and products in the production process. The finishing touch. In his installation Sleep Mode: The Art of the Screensaver, internet artist Rafaël Rozendaal presents a remarkable collection of screensavers in Het Nieuwe Instituut. These almost forgotten products were developed to protect computer screens against image burn. But they also have a special cultural significance because they produced the first entirely computer-generated images.

In the Spring semester the Jaap Bakema Study Centre will welcome the TU Delft Visiting Professors Lionel Devlieger and Maarten Gielen of the Brussels based office Rotor. At the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of TU Delft Devlieger and Gielen will supervise a special design studio working on the intersections of research, analysis, archival explorations, design, material re-use, and exhibition making. The Jaap Bakema Study Centre will support the studio by organizing research seminars based on the archival collections of Het Nieuwe Instituut.

On 27 November, the architecture biennale in Venice ended. Over 190.000 visitors attended _BLUE _and the presentation was positively reviewed in the international press.

On Saturday 22 October the winners of the New Material Award 2016 were announced. The winners are Olivier van Herpt - New Material Award 2016 - and Diana Scherer - New Material Fellow.

Het Nieuwe Instituut - Museum for Architecture, Design and Digital Culture - presents from 29 January to 25 June 2017 a varied programme of exhibitions, including Designing the Surface, Sleep Mode. The French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster created a work especially for Sonneveld House that will be on show from 13 November 2016 until 6 March 2017 in the museum house. Opera-house by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster is a conceptual domestic opera based on early 20th-century operatic music and technology.

The DATAstudio, an initiative of Het Nieuwe Instituut and the city of Eindhoven, organizes a design session during DDW16 on hidden subjects on the digital map. How can these data deserts be given a voice in both public opinion and municipal policy?

This autumn Het Nieuwe Instituut is initiating a series of dialogues in which young architects from the Netherlands and Flanders discuss their design practice in relation to four themes. The dialogues take place within the framework of the exhibition 'Maatwerk - Massarbeit' at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, for which Het Nieuwe Instituut has provided material on loan.
