As a designer and artist whose work focuses on the public realm, Maurik explores the changing role of home with us. Come along for a different look at domesticity!

(A)WAKE shares the installation IF WALLS COULD TALK with visitors as part of the _Home of Your Own series in the exhibition the_Temporary House of Home. The opening evening begins with a conversation about dealing with conflict, followed by a guided tour through the installation.

Met hun multimediale installatie IF WALLS COULD TALK grijpen de kunstenaars, ontwerpers en programmamakers van (A)WAKE de derde editie van Home of Your Own aan voor een bespiegeling op het nieuwe maatschappelijke weefsel dat we tijdens de coronapandemie hebben geweven. Geïnspireerd door het gezegde dat 'de muren op je af komen', confronteert de installatie de bezoeker met behulp van virtual reality met dit nieuwe maatschappelijke weefsel. In de VR-ervaring maken bezoekers kennis met de zawiya (vrij te vertalen als 'de hoek'), een term die in de Maghreb en West-Afrika wordt gebruikt voor een plek om conflicten binnen de gemeenschap te verzamelen en op te lossen.

In a workshop supervised by artist Frank Bruggeman, participants must create a small wilderness installation. Can they imitate something of the unpredictability and tension of nature, using what they've found on a walk in the woods (or in the garden or even at the supermarket), and then bring it home?

For the second in the _Home of Your Own _series of installations, which is part of the Temporary House of Home exhibition, Francisca Khamis Giacoman presents As Close As I Get. Through regular ongoing performances or 'activations' during the exhibition period, she will continue to develop the work. Materiality, ephemerality and access play a central part in her practice and relationship with home. As Close As I Get will be open from 16 September to 7 November, with performances on 18 September and 16 and 30 October.

The One Minutes Series for September-October is curated by Manuwi C Tokai on the occasion of the exhibition Temporary House of Home at Het Nieuwe Instituut. Manuwi C Tokai invites everyone to submit a one-minute video in response to the question Akarani Bono Awowa? (Where is the place where you see the sun rise and set?) This is the Kali'na way of asking: Where are you from? Where is your home?
