Memory of the Designed Landscape
Travelling installation
In 2024, four case studies from the programme were presented as an installation. The installation formed part of the exhibition Garden Futures, which was on display at the Nieuwe Instituut until April 2025. Since then, it has been travelling to various locations across the Netherlands, where it is shown at partner institutions within the network.
The installation presents videos and photographs from a range of garden and landscape archives, illustrating both the diversity of these collections and the challenges involved in their management and preservation.
Filmmaker Luc Schraauwers created a series of portraits of the four case studies researched in the programme up to that point. In addition, photographer Johannes Schwartz visited eight archives across the country to create a photo series offering direct insight into the condition of archives that are sometimes endangered or abandoned. The installation was designed by Jack Bardwell.
The installation Memory of the Designed Landscape was shown at the Nieuwe Instituut (15 November 2024–13 April 2025), at Wageningen University (25 August 2025–2 February 2026), and can be seen at Het Flevolands Archief from 2 February to 1 June 2026.
