Duckweed Tile by Flip the City

The easiest garden in the Netherlands is designed by Flip the City! The tiny garden tile counters the oppressive growth of duckweed in Dutch water bodies and improves local biodiversity.

Duckweed threatens underwater life by eradicating its living conditions as it depletes oxygen levels and blocks out light. Flip the City, an initiative by Leon van Klaveren and Hidde Griek, uses the excess duckweed to make these tiles that act as tiny gardens in the pavement. No gardening skills are required: simply dig up a paving stone, place the Duckweed Tile in its place, add the seeds and water, and watch the plants flower year after year.

The tile is made out of duckweed composted with other bio-material, such as wood chips. It measures 30 x 30 cm, which makes it a perfect fit for the average Dutch street pavement tile, that also covers more than half of the traditional gardens in the Netherlands. The selection of seeds contains a variety of 35 native flowering plants, provided by a local producer in Friesland.
