International Visitors Programme
During the International Conference on Live Coding (ICLC), which took place in Utrecht from 19 to 23 April 2023 , Iván Abreu and Malitzin Cortés (CNDSD) came to the Netherlands at the invitation of the International Visitors Programme. They gave a concert and a workshop.
CNDSD and Iván Abreu concert
On Friday, 21 April, CNDSD and Iván Abreu presented AUTO{}Construcción, an audiovisual concert of live coding and algorithm-based video game experiences. Together, CNDSD and Iván Abreu create 3D images with machine learning. The audiovisual immersion is accompanied by text and an avatar. This concert explored the relationship between speculative architecture and the phenomenon of informal housing built by ‘non-architects’ in countries such as Mexico, the USA, Latin America, Asia, India and peripheral areas of Europe.
Workshop
On Saturday 22 April, Malitzin Cortés (CNDSD) and Ivan Abreu led the workshop Live Cinema Coding with Tidal Cycles, Processing and Unreal Engine. The aim of the workshop was to demonstrate the authors’ workflow, both conceptually and technically. They define ‘live cinema coding’ as a performative practice (heir to live cinema) that uses live coding to sequence cinematic shots, transform a 3D scene, animate actors, control lighting, process video, and more. They use the pattern power of tidal cycles to create sound. This creates visual synesthesia and sound visualisation by transforming these musical patterns into visual patterns.
About the International Conference on Live Coding
The International Conference on Live Coding (ICLC) is dedicated to practices and research that focus on the technologies and philosophies that interpret the use of computer code in the context of live performance. The programme revolves around the practice of live coding: an activity in which a maker writes a piece of software in real time that produces images and/or sound. The coding process is shown on a screen, allowing the public to participate and making the digital process more accessible.
