For four months from 19 May 2019, Het Nieuwe Instituut's programming will be investigating more-than-human knowledge. 100 years on from the foundation of Bauhaus, under the banner Neuhaus, we are opening a temporary academy taking visitors on an exploration of what it could mean for humanity to learn to experience the world without putting itself at the centre. What if humans could learn to think, observe and design led by the interests and possibilities of animals, plants, robots and microbes?

Spaces for Learning explored 150 years of experimentation and innovation in the design of educational environments using a broad selection of drawings and models from the collection.

Dirk van den Heuvel, head of the Jaap Bakema Study Centre, is taking part in the creative residency programme of the Department of Architecture at Monash Art Design & Architecture (MADA) in Melbourne, Australia. During his residency, 'Place Names: Queer ways of (not) being at home', he will pursue his research on the interrelationship between queer theory, language and domestic architecture.

Het Nieuwe Instituut stages two presentations during the international design week from 9 to 14 April 2019 in Milan, that both focus on design research. _I See That I See What You Don't See _is the official Dutch contribution to the XXII Triennale di Milano, and the New Material Award presents innovative material research at Alcova.

Works by Joost Baljeu, Kho Liang Ie, Carel Weeber and Jaap Bakema and others from the collection of Het Nieuwe Instituut are on display from 23 March at the Design Museum in Den Bosch in the exhibition 'Modern Nederland 1963-1989', which examines the role of the Dutch government as a patron of modern design.

The minister for education, culture and science, Ingrid van Engelshoven, has given Het Nieuwe Instituut the task of identifying important and threatened archives of design and digital culture. The commission follows a joint letter from the design field, in which the Association Dutch Designers (BNO) took the lead. Together with Het Nieuwe Instituut, the Wim Crouwel Institute, the Louis Kalff Institute and other parties, they pushed for an action plan for design archives.

On 4 March 2019, Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb and Alderman Said Kasmi of the Education, Culture and Tourism department received the publication containing the results of the Letters to the Mayor project.

Op 1 maart 2019 opent I See That I See What You Don't See, de Nederlandse bijdrage aan de XXII Triennale di Milano. In deze Triënnale onderzoekt curator Paola Antonelli met het thema Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival, welke rol design kan spelen bij het herstellen van de relatie tussen de mens en zijn omgeving, in zowel natuurlijke als sociale ecosystemen. De Nederlandse bijdrage reageert op het overkoepelende thema met een presentatie over onze relatie tot duisternis.

On Friday 8 November 2019, the exhibition _Art on Display 1949-69 _will open at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. This exhibition is the result of a partnership between Het Nieuwe Instituut/Jaap Bakema Study Centre and the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. It will be on show in Lisbon until March 2020, after which it will get a follow-up at Het Nieuwe Instituut.

Three makers have an opportunity to devote seven months to creating new autonomous media work with the digital collections of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and Het Nieuwe Instituut.

Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Serpentine Galleries launch an Open Call for an embedded researcher in the field of design, in collaboration with Studio Formafantasma.

In the first semester of the 2018-2019 academic year, Dirk van den Heuvel is tutoring the seminar series Encounters in the Museum for post-master students at The Berlage Center for Advanced Studies in Architecture and Urban Design. The seminar revisits the creative nexus architecture-art by investigating a handful of art exhibitions designed by architects for the display of avant-garde works and permanent collections from the postwar years 1949-69.
