Het Nieuwe Instituut Online/Offline #10

During the temporary closure of Het Nieuwe Instituut, a weekly newsletter provides an update on our online programming and a selection of our online content. This web page is based on Newsletter #10 - 28 May 2020.

While Het Nieuwe Instituut has developed alternative formats, remaining open online, it's now also possible to physically reopen on 1 June, thanks to the reduced pressure on healthcare. However, the protocol and various measures required mean that we can welcome fewer visitors than before. This has prompted us to develop more hybrid programming in the near future, based on online and offline elements. In order to lower any barriers to a visit, we have covered the various restrictions as far as possible. We have also approached the situation as a design question and are offering new forms of visit. From 1 June, there is an opportunity to participate in a unique visitor experience, one that is about personal meaning and intimacy and through which you can still celebrate each other's company - at a distance.

At the same time, the policy around Covid-19 has led to some topical questions. How does the design domain relate, for example, to the idea of the 1.5 metre society and the basic forms of inclusion and exclusion associated with it? The disciplining and exclusive mechanisms of design have been discussed regularly within the institute in recent years. It is interesting that these qualities are now repeatedly being employed as solutions to a social problem.

Now Online _and _Offline at Het Nieuwe Instituut

Since the physical closure, the institute has compiled this weekly newsletter, which focuses on the current programme - this week the re-opening of G/D Thyself, The Hoodie, Set Stage Screen and Sonneveld House -, the richness of our public web archive, and the activities of others, based on a changing theme. We are continuing this digital programme. Spread the word and tell others who might be interested in receiving this newsletter.

Sketch for 'abstract electric chemistry' routing design by 75B.

75B’s Design Intervention Commissioned by Het Nieuwe Instituut, design agency 75B intervenes in the building's public space and playfully confronts visitors and employees with the idea of the 1.5 metre society. The visual language is inspired by chemical connections and electrical diagrams and thus represents a mix of chemistry (between people) and the electric feeling of being together.

From the Collection: Unlocked/Reconnected In the institute's entrance hall, a diptych, made using material from the Dutch National Collection for Architecture and Urban Planning, is on show at the invitation of Unlocked/Reconnected, inspired by the concept of 'at home in the time of the pandemic'. This collectively curated exhibition connects even the most diverse 'homes for the arts' and marks the restart of public cultural life. Each institution - including Utrecht's Centraal Museum, Galerie VIVID (Rotterdam) and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam - selects one work especially for this purpose.

Preliminary sketches, related to the graphic design and exhibition design of 'Open: A Bakema Celebration', 2014, Experimental Jetset

Open: A Bakema Celebration The exhibition, Open: A Bakema Celebration, in the Dutch pavilion at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, offered critical reflections on the idea of the open society through the work and research of Jaap Bakema (1914-81). Bakema, a leading architect of the post-war period of modern architecture, wanted to build a society that was democratic, egalitarian and open to everyone. In 2020, his idealism is gaining relevance in the context of the current plea for the 1.5 metre society.
