Temporary Fashion Museum
Photographer Paul van Riel shot nearly every fashion show in the 1970s and 80s.
The third collection consists of Van Riel's image archive. In 1974, Van Riel accidentally came across the show of the Japanese designer Kenzo, who had just had his break-through in Europe. He offered the images to various Dutch fashion magazines, with the unintended consequence that he would eventually photograph about 1.000 fashion shows in Paris in Milan until 1990. When he parted with the fashion world in 1989, his collection included over 80.000 slides and negatives.
In the so-called Cinema - normally part of the archives of spatial designers Rianne Makkink and Jurgen Bey, but rebuilt especially for Collected by.... - Paul van Riel presents a selection of the analogue photo material. Backstage photos, reproductions of published articles, fashion schedules and numerous other images offer an associative and rich image of fashion in the seventies and eighties of the last century.
