How To? A Guide Through Knowing
Communities of Tacit Knowledge: Architecture and its Ways of Knowing, or simply TACK, aims to gain a better understanding of the tacit knowledge that architects use when designing buildings and cities. TACK is an Innovative Training Network as part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions within the European Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. It is formed by ten European academic institutions, three leading cultural institutions for architecture, and nine leading architectural firms. These partners jointly offer an innovative PhD training programme in the field of tacit knowledge in architecture, resulting in ten parallel PhD projects.
Communities of Tacit Knowledge: Architecture and its Ways of Knowing, or simply TACK, is an international research project that aims to gain a better understanding of the often implicit experiential knowledge which architects draw on when designing buildings and cities. TACK, formed by ten European academic institutions, three cultural institutions for architecture and nine architectural firms, initiated a second round of TACK Talks: How To? A Guide Through Knowing.
On 11 March, 25 March, 8 April and 6 May, the second series of TACK Talks explored the interplay between culture and professional practice. These talks investigated how tacit knowledge is identified, communicated and produced in relationship to society. Representatives from Architekturzentrum Wien, the Flanders Architecture Institute and Het Nieuwe Insitituut - including directors, curators, archivists, researchers and graphic designers - discussed their different perspectives on mediating tacit knowledge and addressed challenging questions surrounding their practice.
These topics began with How to Choose the Expert, regarding the notion of expertise and the existence of a socially established design culture. This was followed by How to Archive Embodied Knowledge, recognising the agency of other actors in architectural production, both human and non-human. Next was How to Define What Belongs Where, acknowledging the entanglements between territory and the built environment. And, finally, How to Reach Out to Communities of Practice, on communication and public engagement.
