Interview with Noam Toran, Het Nieuwe Instituut, October 2016
Noam Toran's work involves the creation of intricate narratives developed as a means to reflect upon the interrelations of history, memory, cinema and literature. Research based, the works examine how fiction influences the collective consciousness, be it as history, myth or memory forming. This is realised through an original way of deconstructing and reconfiguring cinematic and literary codes, conventions and structures, and weaving them with historical materials, thereby complicating and questioning the divide between artefact and artifice. The work is exhibited, screened and published internationally, and is part of numerous public collections. During his fellowship Noam carried out research for the project Black and White and Red All Over.
Toran worked on the Thursday Night Live! Towards a New Stupidity - American Silent Comedy and the Soviet Avant-Garde.
The solo exhibition _The Jungle_ by Noam Toran was on show in May 2017 in the Plymouth PCA Gallery, UK. The Jungle draws from the traditions of political theatre from the first half of the 20th century. From the Soviet Proletkult, to the agitprops of pre-war Europe, through to the socialist, anarchist, and union-run troupes in the Americas and European colonies, the project reveals the dynamic ways in which working class theatre, through its coalescing of fictional and factual material, has informed and infected radical consciousness.
