Open Space 2024. Chaeeun Lee. Endophyte.

Five emerging makers showcase their work in the free presentation space Gallery 3 on the 3rd floor of the Nieuwe Instituut. In Open Space, Chaeeun Lee, Hussein Shikha, Simon Bultynck, Ilaria Palmieri, and Luc Weytingh have free rein to each fill one corridor during this period.

As part of Open Space, Simon Bultynck presents his work May the Deaf Hear It Screaming, which responds to the possibilities of language and text and encourages visitors to reflect on the boundaries between presence and absence, and between idea and matter.

In the project To be a host in a hosting country, designer Ilaria Palmieri works with a self-developed method of spatial design based on hospitality, as a tool for empowerment.

In the context of Open Space, artist Chaeeun Lee presents 'Endophyte', in which she juxtaposes her own experiences of identity, coexistence and adaptation with the symbiotic relationships between trees, and between trees and the parasites which infect them.

In this Open Space work, creative technologist Luc Weytingh uses artificial intelligence to translate a collection of dream reports into images.

Hussein Shikha

For his contribution to Open Space, Hussein Shikha presents GARDEN_OF_EDEN.ISO, in which he combines motifs from the weaving tradition of Mesopotamian Marsh Arabs and ‘coarse-grained’ personal memories in the pixelated representation of the memory card of a game console from his youth.

Gallery 3

In addition to its own programming, Nieuwe Instituut offers a platform for third-party initiatives from the field of art and design in its building in Rotterdam’s Museumpark. Since the beginning of 2020, pop-up exhibitions in the Gallery 3 space have given individual makers and organisations the opportunity to show their work to a wider audience in a museum setting.
