Prix de Rome Architectuur 2018

Lesley Moore's involvement in the Prix de Rome dates back to 2013 when the design studio designed the catalogue for the nominees' work. According to Karin van den Brandt, who founded Lesley Moore with Alex Clay, the prestigious prize lacked an identity. Therefore, in 2014, the designers developed a graphic identity with a malleable, sculptural quality. "The design employs a large X motif that we can iterate anew for each edition," explains Van den Brandt. "Since the Prix de Rome has a long tradition of encouraging young and promising talent, the X motif symbolises the future and the past in which the prize is embedded." The Prix de Rome was first awarded in 1808, making it the Netherlands' oldest art prize. The Mondriaan Fund has organised the award since 2011. It is awarded quadrennially to an architect and biennially to an artist. Lesley Moore also designed a website that explains the history of the prize and informs about previous editions and winners.

For each Prix de Rome, Lesley Moore develops a sub-identity, using the X as a recurring motif. For 2018 architecture edition, the designers created a campaign featuring an animation in which the X is the protagonist. It disassembles into four bands that shift relative to one another to form different letters. Unlike the fine art edition, the architectural edition allows the graphic desin more presence. According to Van den Brandt, they can forge the inherent multiformity of an architectural exhibition into a whole. "When developing an identity for clients, we look for a robust foundation that can foster further developments. In this way, established elements can combine with new frameworks and rules to enable discovery. For us, it's a process of imagination in relation to typography." For Het Nieuwe Instituut, Lesley Moore collaborated with Collective Works, who designed the Prix de Rome exhibition. They placed an X of fluorescent tubes at the start of the exhibition, creating a link between the presentation's design and graphic identity.

The Prix de Rome Architecture is the oldest and biggest Dutch prize for artists and architects under the age of 40. _The Prix de Rome Architecture 2018_ exhibition presented the work of the four nominees. They developed an architectural proposal for the area near the Sixhaven in Amsterdam North, opposite Central Station; a plan with a critical perspective on Amsterdam in the 21st century.

Lesley Moore

Lesley Moore is the brainchild of design duo Karin van den Brandt and Alex Clay. The studio designs identities for companies and organisations. The designers see an identity as an eco-system of interacting elements, such as design logotypes, layout systems, typography, colour schemes, or animations. With graphic design as their weapon-of-choice, they aim to inspire meaningful change by triggering the imagination. Partnerships include Centraal Museum Utrecht, Dutch National Opera & Ballet, The Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, Hotel Casa and the Gorilla Collective. Lesley Moore design studio is situated in a former dockside warehouse in Amsterdam..
