Designer Patrick Hutchinson’s project explores the legacy of STEIM, a hub for experimental electronic music and instrument development based in Amsterdam. With the closure of STEIM in 2020 and the subsequent challenges in accessing its archival material, Patrick sets out to curate and showcase the extraordinary electronic music instruments crafted within its walls for over fifty years.

Patrick’s aim is to capture the essence of these instruments that have often defied conventional software and design constraints. Through a prototype website, he offers visitors a curated glimpse into STEIM's creative output, accompanied by interviews, images, and other artefacts that provide insight into the instrument-making process. Complementing the digital archive is a published ‘zine that invites readers to explore the hidden gems and idiosyncrasies of STEIM's enduring legacy. By sharing these stories and creations, the artist hopes to inspire future generations of enthusiasts and instrument builders to preserve the craft of electronic music making.
