Do data decay? Data ages differently than other materials in the natural world, so much so they are thought to not degrade over time like an apple or stone might erode under certain environmental conditions. But what if data did decay? What effect would this have on digital media? Bits to Pieces is a speculative installation that explores the process of decay and its effect on our perception of data and digital media as an infallible material.
In the project, Yotam Sion and Erez Levanon have developed bespoke software and hardware that monitors humidity, air quality, and light levels to speculatively measure the rate of data deterioration alongside the degradation of natural flowers. Ultimately, Yotam and Erez seek to highlight the realities of excessive digital production and consumption and the consequences of digital permanence.
