The Solar Biennale: Alex Nathanson (US)

During the opening seminar of The Solar Biennale at the Nieuwe Instituut on 9 September 2022, Alex Nathanson shared his thoughts and work on the intersection of solar technology and the digital domain. In his talk, Alex focused on the Solar Protocol: an experimental network of small solar-powered data servers around the world, that wants to frame the Internet as a natural resource.

In addition to the talk, Alex also hosted a 90 minute, hands-on workshop where participants playfully learned about the workings of solar technology by designing and creating a draw-bot powered by a solar cell. The workshop was one of six breakout sessions addressing several practical aspects of solar design. Alex’ solar tinkering session enjoyed large interest from the seminar participants and ‘sold out’ completely.

Alex Nathanson is an award winning designer, artist, technologist, and educator. His work is primarily focused on exploring both the experimental and practical applications of sustainable energy technologies, particularly photovoltaic solar power. His work has been widely featured at several internationally acclaimed museums, in art and technology publications and events.
