Samuel Bianchini (FR), Emanuele Quinz (DE) & Patricia Ribault (FR)

Het Nieuwe Instituut teamed up with Sophie Krier (artist and researcher, fellow researcher EnsadLab / PSL Research University) to invite Patricia Ribault (glassblowing expert and researcher, PhD, Junior Professor in History and Theory of Gestaltung at the Cluster of Excellence 'Image, Knowledge, Gestaltung' and at the Institute for Cultural History and Theory of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), Samuel Bianchini (artist and associate professor, PhD HDR, at École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs--Paris (EnsAD) / PSL University Paris), and Emanuele Quinz (art historian and curator, PhD, Professor at Paris 8 University and at École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs-Paris (EnsAD) / PSL University Paris).

On Monday 17 June, Sophie and her guests met with Tim Huisman, curator image & medicine at the Rijksmuseum Boerhaave in Leiden, and travelled to Amsterdam to meet with Portable Palace (Evelina Domnitch & Dmtri Gelfand) at their studio, ending the day at WAAG where they met Lucas Evers, head of programme and manager Wetlab and Chris Julien, research director.

On Tuesday 18 June, after a tour through the Neuhaus exhibition by co-curator Klaas Kuitenbrouwer, a special DISSECT NEUHAUS meeting took place at Het Nieuwe Instituut. Besides the guests, other participants were Klaas Kuitenbrouwer and Anastasia Kubrak - members of the Research department at Het Nieuwe Instituut, Tim Huismans - curator Boerhaave Museum and designer Henriëtte Waal.

DISSECT is part round table, part live performance, a multidisciplinary debate with works of contemporary art and design staged in an experimental dispositif.

Critically referencing classic anatomy lessons - like that of Doctor Tulp, portrayed by Rembrandt in 1632 - Dissect is an updated theatre for the analysis and discussion of contemporary works of art and design in the very presence of the works.

DISSECT stems from an original idea of Samuel Bianchini and Emanuele Quinz, developed by the Reflective Interaction research group of EnsadLab, the laboratory of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (EnsAD), PSL University, Paris, supported by the Chaire Arts & Sciences of École Polytechnique, École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs - PSL, and the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation. The set up was first tested by Quinz, Bianchini and Ribault a.o. at Centre Pompidou during the Behavioral Matters symposium on March 29, 2019.
