Purpose of visit
The five designers and researchers will visit the New Material Award_ exhibition where they will be introduced to a few of the nominees - a select group of visual artist, (fashion) designers, and architects who are using new materials and innovative techniques in their work. Next on the programme will be a visit to Material Sense (an independent organisation for material innovation) and DRIVE 2018, the annual Design Research & Innovation Festival with the 2018 theme: Towards an Innovative & Inclusive Society._ These visits will update them on themes such as health, VR in heritage, and living materials.
They will furthermore delve into the subject of recycling plastic via David Hakken's Precious Plastics V4 project with over 200 plastic recycling workspaces around the world, the role of design for healthcare through a visit to De Waag's exhibition Chronic Health - If not us then who? at the Dutch Design Week, symbiotic life forms via BIO Artlab's Cybernetic Forest where technology and nature are merged, and the important role of design in general by visiting the Mind the Step exhibition at the Dutch Design Week which features design driven by technology and research. During their visit, they will strengthening the international material network around the NMA and try to find common ground to develop further programming and will look for network enhancement and consolidation in the Dutch field of design while exploring opportunities for further collaboration.
Function
Peter Yeadon is Professor advanced materials RISD. He is the founder of the NYC-based Yeadon Space Agency and known for his pioneering research into new applications for advanced materials in architecture and design. Julia Lohmann is Professor for Design, she is a German-born designer/researcher and investigates the ethical and material value systems underpinning our relationship with flora and fauna. Julia is a Professor for Design at the University of Fine Arts, Hamburg (HFBK) and directs her London-based design practice. Mareike Gast is Professor of Industrial Design at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. In addition to her work in product development, research and teaching Marieke regularly writes for different magazines about material research. Sarah Kettley is Chair of Material and Design Innovation with a remit to develop new cross-disciplinary teaching and research initiatives at the intersections of making traditions, new technologies, and the humanities. Sarah Kingston is a Curator at Schaudepot Lab Vitra, an interactive education space that gives an insight into the material diversity of design and the development processes that range from the initial design concept to a finished product.
