Goal of visit

Karen Palmer is visiting Holland as part of het Nederlands Filmfestival (NFF) from 27 September to 5 October in Utrecht. Through the Open Call of the International Visitors Programme Palmer was invited by the NFF to participate in the Our Brave New World Sessions on 30 September. An inspirational afternoon on the extent to which we still have control over technologies we developed and the way these technologies influence the way we tell our stories. Palmer will deliver the keynote speech for this event. Following on this event, she will give a storytelling workshop at LAVA, Amsterdam, on 1 October. During this workshop Palmer, together with the participants, will investigate what kind of stories are needed to create 'Our Brave New World'. During her stay in the Netherlands Palmer also visits Het Nieuwe Instituut to explore possibilities for future collaborations.

Function

Karen Palmer (USA) is a multidisciplinary filmmaker focuses on Face Recognition technology. Her live-action film RIOT (prototype) premiered in 2016 and received critical acclaim. The project uses facial recognition, 3D sound and A.I. to navigate the spec through a dangerous riot. In her work Palmer combines film, storytelling, art, science, technology and neurology to generate responsive and interactive film experiences. Palmer is a respected international public speaker on subjects such as New Tech and Storytelling and shares her vision on the future of gaming, film, wellness and technology.
