International Visitors Programme
From 3 to 7 July 2019, Henry Andersen en Bryana Fritz, founders of Slow Reading Club visit Rotterdam through the Open Call of Het Nieuwe Instituut's International Visitor Programme invited by Showroom MAMA.
Slow Reading Club (SRC) is a semi-fictional reading group that deals in constructed situations for collective reading. SRC looks at, probes, and interrupts 'readership' as a way to stimulate the contact zones between reader and text, text and text, reader and reader. SRC does not aim at deconstruction or even comprehension of the texts in hands, but at the production of a kind of excess: to temporarily suspend criticality for intimacy and to negotiate agencies with the text.
Slow Reading Club premiered at kunstenfestivaldesarts 2017, in Brussels as part of an evening titled Before the Codes. Since then they have presented work in a number of performance, art, and discursive contexts including MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles; Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen; ZKM - Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe; La Loge, Brussels; Bâtard Festival 2017 (Beursschouwburg, Brussels & Veem House for Performance, Amsterdam); Louise Dany, Oslo; Tin Flats, Los Angeles; ESBA TALM, Angers; CalArts, California; and as part of the Montez Press Radio program in MoMA Ps1, New York. Upcoming presentations include LTD Academy, Zürich and a solo exhibition at Damien and the Love Guru, Brussels in early 2020. Their practice has been the subject of essays published in Etcetra and L'Art Meme. SRC split their time between Brussels and its various elsewheres.
