In the run-up to the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, where the Nieuwe Instituut is curating the cultural programme for the Dutch pavilion, three Japan-based staff members of the programme were invited to the Netherlands in October. The visit was organised in the spirit of the pavilion’s overarching theme, Common Ground, which emphasises cooperation and dialogue.

Hiroaki Nagahata from Study Magazine and Miya Yurina and Haru from High(er) Magazine took part in a programme organised by the Nieuwe Instituut and the Dutch Design Foundation. The guests from the independent magazines visited the opening weekend of Dutch Design Week 2024 in Eindhoven to get an insight into the fashion and cultural landscape in the Netherlands. They saw the exhibition Regeneration: Fashion from the Source by New Order of Fashion, featuring ground-breaking research into the possibilities of seaweed through unique designs, and took part in a seaweed dyeing workshop. At the Fashion Tech Farm studio and incubator, they also spoke to designers who were working on issues such as accessibility and sustainability.

The guests also had the opportunity to interact with selected makers and designers at Dutch Design Week venues such as Microlab, Manifestations, Klokgebouw and Sectie-C. The visitors used their time in the Netherlands to collaborate with Dutch-based creatives to create content for their respective magazines.

Osaka-born Hiroaki Nagahata launched the independent fashion magazine Study in 2014.

While studying at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Haru co-founded the independent magazine High(er) as editor-in-chief. Under the motto “Being honest with ourselves”, the magazine covers topics such as politics, gender and feminism.

Miya Yurina is the producer, editor and photographer of High(er) Magazine.
