International Visitors Programme
In June, Kiosk Rotterdam invited Lani Hanna to the Netherlands as part of the International Visitors Programme. Lani Hanna is one of the authors of the book Armed by Design, about the graphic design of revolutionary Cuba, and came to Rotterdam to give a series of talks and contribute to research.
On the evening of 21 June 2024, Lani Hanna gave a short presentation on the Interference Archive, which is a library, archive and gallery of the graphic design and visual culture of social movements. The talk was followed by a discussion with historian Megan Hoetger exploring the idea and reality of archives, and what international solidarity through publishing might look like today.
On 23 June, Kiosk hosted a solidarity poster printing session, resulting in a selection of designs created by the participants. Lani Hanna introduced her work with the Interference Archive and the imagery of Armed by Design. Flip Driest then introduced and guided the risograph printing process. Each participant created a two- or three-colour poster with slogans such as: Aluta Continua!, Come for the Challa Stay for the Anti-Zionism, and All Eyes On Rafah, followed by a meal cooked by the collective Rode Keukentje which uses local and surplus food products and contributes to community initiatives.
Lani Hanna is an editor of Armed by Design and has been a part of the @interferencearchive collective since 2013. Her other research interests include internationalism, counter-institutional archives, political infrastructure and radical pedagogy.
Megan Hoetger is an independent performance and media historian based in Amsterdam.
Kiosk Rotterdam is a bookshop, (risograph) printmaking workshop and press run by artist Philippa ‘Flip’ Driest. The selection includes radical/critical theory, fiction, poetry and self-publishing practices.
