International Visitors Programme
Ana Carla Fonseca, one of the most prominent and popular researchers and speakers on Brazil's creative economy, visited the Netherlands to learn more about the country's creative industry and its body of knowledge and experience. Het Nieuwe Instituut and DutchCulture, working in partnership with the Netherlands consulate in São Paulo, compiled a varied and extensive itinerary based on her interests.
Fonseca is closely involved in public-private revitalisation projects in the old centre of São Paulo. She spoke about the subject with key Dutch creative-industry policymakers working at the national and local levels, including culture and media director-general Marjan Hammersma and members of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Topteam Creatieve Industrie, and the Creative Industries Fund NL. Fonseca also discussed subjects such as creative clusters, museums, education, and the relationship between the harbour and the city in conversations with the urban planning and architecture firm Zones Urbaines Sensibles, the architecture firm Doepel Strijkers, the design association Capital D, the housing corporation Trudo, and Charles Esche of the Van Abbemuseum (also curator of the 2014 São Paulo art biennial). Fonseca also attended a talk by the Japanese architect Hideyuki Nakayama, a fellow guest in Het Nieuwe Instituut's International Visitors' Programme.
Fonseca organised a seminar on 17 August 2013 in São Paulo on the revitalisation of cities and how bottom-up initiatives can contribute to urban innovation. Het Nieuwe Instituut's international projects manager, Alma Ploeger, gave a talk at the seminar focusing on the example of Rotterdam.
