Life at The Niteshop
In Rotterdam-West, Concrete Blossom opened The Niteshop as its own museum, an embassy for the super-diverse city and a research institute for capturing new insights. In, for example, the video essay Articulating Sauce, Concrete Blossom takes the thinking of rapper and street philosopher Gucci Mane as a starting point for a consideration of the non-academic language and knowledge production of hip-hop.
"Anyone who knows hip hop culture knows that it is a world in which everything, whether loose or fixed, is remixed. Image, language and spaces turn into building blocks that are used to create new worlds. Since the emergence of hip hop in the 1970s and 1980s, it has been transformed into an instrument of socio-cultural alchemy in the hands of several generations of young people. Hip hop stands for the ability to force a world that is not set up by or for them to change. Think fashion and media and other domains that could follow. During Life at The Niteshop we examine how exponents of Urban Culture or The Culture can produce new languages and knowledge from an underdog position that have the potential to change society."
