Het Nieuwe Instituut presents _Automated Landscapes. Time, Cycles, Automata _at the 8th Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture in Shenzhen from 12 December 2019 to March 2020.

Automated Landscapes researchers Marten Kuijpers and Merve Bedir will take part in Starting from Research: Automated Landscapes, a research programme focusing on artistic and design approaches to research, organized by the Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts in Hong Kong.

Director of Research Marina Otero Verzier participates in Mextrópoli 2019 in Mexico City. She takes part in the Mextrópoli conference on 12 March, where she will give a talk on Het Nieuwe Instituut's long term research project Automated Landscapes.

On Thursday January 10 2018, Marten Kuijpers, senior researcher at Het Nieuwe Instituut, gave a lecture on Automated Landscapes as part of the programme 'Less is Less- More is More: The Production of Everyday Life'.

From its main port in Rotterdam, to its productive hinterlands of greenhouses and farms, the logic and relations that define the physical and social landscape of work and labor in the Netherlands are being redefined by machines, data and interfaces. In this event, Meiny Prins, Susan Schuppli, Stephan Petermann, Víctor Muñoz Sanz, Marina Otero Verzier and Marten Kuijpers will engage in a public conversation on the spatial implications of automation for the built environment. Arjen Oosterman will moderate the evening.

Het Nieuwe Instituut will organise a series of activities in the Netherlands, comprising of field trips to data centers and and submarine cable landing points. Together with critics, technologists and architects, including Mike Klerks (Mike Klerks Architecten), Niels Hensen (ITB Kwadraat), Richard Boogaard (Smart DC), Peter de Jong (Bytesnet), and Roel Roscam Abbing (Varia), we will gain insight into the design and spatial configuration of these locations.

Architects, artists, data centre industry experts, critics and political scientists addressed the architecture of data centers -- a new spatial typology for human and machine cohabitation, and testing ground for post-human institutions.

Bringing together a select group of experts, practitioners, academics, and students of disciplines related to the built environment, a bus tour will become partly a leisure activity, and partly a workshop aimed to explore current developments in automation and their impact in planning and architecture. Marten Kuijpers and Víctor Muñoz Sanz will act as tour guides of a journey that will take the group around some of the Automated Landscapes of South Holland, including visits to an automated dairy farm, an automated greenhouse, and to the headquarters of the leading Dutch firms in farming and horticultural automation.

Join the editors and contributors for the book launch of Work, Body Leisure, published in conjunction with the Dutch Pavilion at the Biennale Architettura 2018. The publication explores the spatial configurations, living conditions, and notions of the human body engendered by disruptive changes in labor, its ethos, and its conditions.
