The Making Of 51 Sprints

The Makers of 51 Sprints

Artist and designer Yuri Veerman launched an Arabic version of the Dutch national anthem (the 'Wilhelmus'), a Stardust Machine that grinds up euros, and post-nationalist Dutch flags. He noted that symbols are a recurring theme in his work. Yuri based the form and content of 51 Sprints, for which he wrote the texts, on the initial idea of 51 Sprints.

Random Studio is a digital creative studio that aims to stretch the boundaries of both technical innovation and human perception. 51 Sprints lends itself perfectly to underlining the ambition and goals of this agency. As a partner of Yuri Veerman and Het Nieuwe Instituut, Random Studio concentrates on translating study results and key conclusions into interactive experience. Random took care of the video editing, technical realization and interactive design.

Klaas Kuitenbrouwer is Het Nieuwe Instituut's expert in digital culture, in which capacity he focuses on the relationship between mediation, technology and culture. Watching the historic finals of the 100-metre sprint he noticed that the form of the race is virtually always the same, even though mediation and the conferral of meaning in sports performance are subject to constant development. When it dawned on him that this was actually about the development of the symbolic impact of the athlete, he approached Yuri Veerman with the aim of realizing a project based on this idea.
