Rotterdam Art Week: We need your hair... again!
After its success at last year’s Milan Design Week, New Store 2.0 is back! During Rotterdam Art Week, you can get your hair cut in the foyer of the Nieuwe Instituut and donate your hair clippings as a new raw material. They will be processed into an innovative natural yarn, courtesy of a project by Human Material Loop in collaboration with hairdresser MonoHair by Mariska.

In the New Store, Nieuwe Instituut takes a fresh look at how the shop of the future might work. Can a store help the planet to support life, instead of just using up natural resources to the point of exhaustion? What would alternative forms of exchange look like?
This isn’t just a hypothetical proposal: we are actually starting to test a new value chain in which, in this edition too, we will ‘harvest’ human hair.
Clients can book a haircut on 27, 28 or 29 March 2025, and the resulting hair clippings will be spun into a yarn that can be processed into the most diverse range of textiles.
