Ayatori. Photo: Pien Düthmann

Ayatori by Charlotte Puebla Coenen

Experience the immersive performance a y a t o r i, a piece inspired by the Japanese string game “ayatori”. This 20-25 minute non-verbal performance, created by Charlotte Puebla Coenen, Hinako Yukimoto and Annakha Flos, invites you to wander through a large-scale, interactive yarn installation where you become part of a living scenography. Dancers and participants move inside the threads to explore how movement, material and space can transform into poetic and playful landscapes.

-1 Digital Lab Museumnacht Special

Descend into the basement of the Nieuwe Instituut for two unique experiences at -1 Digital Lab. The interactive fortune-telling of Saddle of Omens (Kaan Korkmaz, 2024) blends traditional wisdom with modern technology. Take a seat on a sensor-equipped saddle that collects data, transformed into a personalized fortune revealed through a VR headset.

What’s a Fungi Night Out without a musical trip down memory lane? The Nostalgia Media Player has a collection of coming of age classics from the 80s, 90s and 00s ready to play. From tracks that defined musical eras to songs that take you back to your first love and first heartbreak.

Fun(k)gi tunes with The Low G Court & Co2RO

Stimulate all your senses at the Nieuwe Café and transform your mushroom-themed museum visit into an adventure. The Rotterdam duo The Low-G Court (Klapsalon and Doo-Bop) will take you on a psychofunkadelic musical journey during A Fung(ki)i Night Out. They’ll spin an all-vinyl set full of mind-expanding tunes and grooving tracks that will leave a lasting impression on your ears until late into the night.

Analogue VJ Co2RO (the spatial designer and lighting artist Marco Broeders) will install his rare projectors, lamps, lenses and slides in the café for an adventurous accompanying light show: high walls, a higher consciousness and higher spheres. To complete the psychedelic mushroom experience, order a fungus-inspired cocktail at the bar in the Nieuwe Café!

Mush-Room 1: Live Ambient AV Set by Nicholas Thayer

Step into Mush-Room 1 for a calming, more-than-human audiovisual experience. Nicholas Thayer, a sound artist, producer and composer, previously DJed at the opening of the FUNGI: Anarchist Designers exhibition. During an in-depth conversation in the auditorium that evening, he provided artistic intermezzos, making music with a houseplant. This time, he is connecting his modular synthesizers and custom-built instruments to mushrooms. Expect a live ambient AV set: Thayer adapts existing compositions to create extended sound and visual experiences, drawing inspiration from the world of fungi and mushrooms for his cross-species voyages of discovery.

Fungi Magic Forest

Join us to create a living, growing, glow-in-the-dark artwork, and explore a world in which fungi grow, glow and collaborate. Taking inspiration from the FUNGI: Anarchist Designers exhibition at the Nieuwe Instituut, this event celebrates the unconventional power of fungi: creatures that collaborate on their own terms, ignore boundaries and create new life in unexpected places. Every mushroom tells a story and every glow contributes to the whole. Just as fungi form a vast underground network, we will connect with each other tonight.
