-1 Encounters: Emergent Listening
Join the discussion about the importance of listening in all its forms. We will explore how listening practices and spaces could influence how our cities are governed and designed. Speakers will include Jolande Venema, Toine van Mourik, Renate Zentschnig, Linnea Semmerling and Colette Aliman. The discussion will be moderated by Federica Notari.
18 September 2025 17:00 - 19:00
The programme will begin with a performance by Rotterdam-based sound artist and researcher Colette Aliman. This will be followed by a discussion about topics such as urban planning and policy, nightlife, listening practices, the potential of sound to help us to imagine new worlds, and the role that knowledge about sound can play in society.
Questions we will ask include: can urban planners draw inspiration from how sound is used in the cultural sector? Should composers be involved in creating city plans? And how can collaborative listening practices and the ‘politics of vibration’, which are being developed in small and large cultural spaces, be translated into municipal policy?
