Counter-Investigations: Responding to Police Violence

This Research Night will focus on developments in the case of Sammy Baker, who died as a result of police violence. The London-based research group Forensic Architecture (FA) and its Berlin-based sister organisation Forensis continue their collaboration with the Nieuwe Instituut, building on previous research with investigative journalism platform Argos.

24 April 2025 17:00 - 19:30

The police killing of Mark Duggan.

Counter forensics is used to uncover and expose human rights violations. It is a form of research in which citizens adopt and use the methods of forensic investigation (of evidence in criminal cases) to check and, if necessary, refute the results of official investigations.

During this meeting, invited speakers will share their expertise in the field of counter-investigation. They will discuss technical investigative practices as well as also activism and the pursuit of justice. There will also be space for personal reflections from Sammy’s family and other victims of police violence. The focus will be on the importance of restorative justice and how we can make police violence visible and address it. How can designers and spatial professionals contribute to exposing systemic injustice?

This Research Night follows on from Evidencing the Police Killing of Sammy Baker.
