An Evening With: Germane Barnes
Architect Germane Barnes talks about his practice and reveals his inspirations and dreams for the future. During the evening he willl discuss his research projects exploring architecture’s social and political agency, as well as his investigations of how the built environment influences Black domesticity. The evening will be moderated by the Nieuwe Instituut’s Artistic Director, Aric Chen.

Germane Barnes
Germane Barnes (Chicago, USA) is an Assistant Professor of Architecture and Director of the Community Housing and Identity Lab at the University of Miami School of Architecture. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture from the University of Illinois and a Master of Architecture from Woodbury University.
Germane Barnes’ award-winning research and design practice investigates the connection between architecture and identity through historical research and design speculation.
His work has been featured in international institutions and publications, most notably the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Chicago Architecture Biennial, The New York Times, Architect Magazine, DesignMIAMI/Art Basel, Metropolis Magazine, Wallpaper* magazine and the National Museum of African American History, where he was identified as a rising designer of the future.
