An Evening With: Constant Dullaart

Dutch artist Constant Dullaart’s work explores the function of art in the new digiverse. Over the course of the evening, he will show us how he uses his artistic skills to examine how the internet informs and manipulates our relationship with art and images. He will be joined by Sanneke Huisman and Klaas Kuitenbrouwer, curators of the exhibition REBOOT at the Nieuwe Instituut, for this insight into his work and practice. The evening is organised in collaboration with the media art platform LI-MA.

Constant Dullaart

Constant Dullaart lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin. Exploring how social and cultural values reverberate in tools and technology, Dullaart creates works that highlight a pleasurable friction between old and new, manual and automated, online and offline, real and unreal. He deconstructs and analyses the specific human circumstances under which technological tools are created, and how this influences the way the tools are subsequently used.

Dullaart explores these processes through the creation of his own ‘artisanal’ social media platform, common.garden. Drawing on his research into neural networks, he investigates how phenomena such as glossolalia (speaking in tongues) and apophenia (patternicity, or seeing patterns in unrelated events) can bridge the gap between humans and technology. Dullaart is Professor of Networked Materialities at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg.
