BioBlitz010 2025 at Zoöp Nieuwe Instituut

What lives in the Museumpark? Which plants and animals do we usually overlook? In 2025, the Nieuwe Instituut Zoöp will also take part in the BioBlitz010, the ‘species census’ which is organised by colleagues from the Natural History Museum Rotterdam, Bureau Stadsnatuur and National Park Rotterdam. In this year’s edition, special attention will be paid to the hidden urban nature under water as we dive into the park’s ponds. And you can help us count – while staying dry!

BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is a ‘species census’, an attempt to count as many plants and animals as possible in a given place and a given period of time. For example, during the Rotterdam BioBlitz010 in the Museumpark this spring, the aim is to observe more than 1000 different species in 24 hours. This year, the focus is on amphibians, fish and the so-called macrofauna: the invertebrate beetles, snails, flatworms and larvae that mainly live in the water. So this time we are going to take a dip in the ponds.

The initiators of this year's BioBlitz010 are not alone in this: the gardeners of the New Garden are fully involved. Frank Bruggeman and Peter Zwaal will put on their waders and scoop out transparent containers full of pond life. Under their inspiring guidance, you can find out which salamanders, fish and underwater insects live beneath the surface of our ponds.

Programme

This year, from TIME, you can take part in a special Zoöp Detour.

We ask: what would the world look like if all living things had equal rights? Spoiler alert: such a world would need new designers, with an eye for all forms of life.

- 14:00–17:00: The gardeners of the New Garden will fill display cases with artworks created by aquatic life.

- 12:00-17:00 (continuous): Count the creatures yourself with the ObsIdentify app.

- 12:00-17:00: Throughout the day, make lifelong friends with all forms of life using Zoöp Search. Go to the reception in the foyer of the Nieuwe Instituut to pick up the package that will start your search.

- 12:00-17:00 (continuous): Visit the installation about the Nieuwe Instituut Zoöp – on the Deck by the side entrance to the institute on the Rochussenstraat side.

- 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00: Join a Detour with Detour Guide Maartje – meet on the steps by the jetty by the pond on the corner of the Jongkindstraat and the Museumpark, to the right of the main entrance to the Nieuwe Instituut.
