Summer Dreams
Summer Dreams is about sun, vacation and leisure. Drawings, models, photographs and other documents show how the Dutch spent their leisure time in the last century: outside in the sun, in the city, on the water, or in nature. From designs for swimming pools, summerhouses and luxury holiday resorts, to travel sketches and drawings of all that grows and blossoms.
The exhibition features the Sporthuis Centrum summerhouses by Jaap Bakema, the beach house by F.A. Warners, and a garden design by Romke de Vries, but also a lazy beach scene by Koen Limperg, the frivolous bathing caps by Henry Wijdeveld, and a drawing of the faint light of a summer evening by Michel de Klerk.
Surprising Finds
_Summer Dreams _is the first edition of _Surprising Finds from the Collection_. For this series archivist Alfred Marks selects extraordinary drawings, photographs, objects and models from the archives of Het Nieuwe Instituut on the basis of a theme. The presentations do not necessarily show the highlights of the Dutch architectural history, but first and foremost show the richness, diversity and narrative power of the collection.
The collection of Het Nieuwe Instituut is the result of nearly one hundred years of collecting. With an ever-changing and innovative collection policy, the collection is continuously developing. The collection specifically focuses on sources that document the process of design and architecture, and give insight into the vision and creativity of the maker. The collection shows how architects and urban planners responded to the challenges of their time; innovative or even conservative, predatory or simply in service. The collection also includes personal documents, letters, travel sketches, autonomous drawings and books.
Makkink & Bey
The office for design, applied art and architecture Studio Makkink & Bey created the spatial design for the series of archive exhibitions entitled Surprising Finds. For each installment, Studio Makkink&Bey carries out a spatial intervention in the interior originally designed by OMA, freeing up the plan of the archive room and creating space for the collection, and guest interventions by young designers and artists.
