Filmmaker Mirte van Duppen tours flexible, relocatable housing projects across the Netherlands, asking residents, policymakers and designers whether temporary architecture can offer affordability and a real sense of home.
In Flexscapes, filmmaker and researcher Mirte van Duppen investigates the rise of flexible, relocatable housing in the Netherlands against the backdrop of an escalating housing crisis. Drawing on her own experience of living in a container home at Amsterdam’s NDSM, Van Duppen embarks on a tour along three similar housing projects, engaging in conversations with residents, policymakers and designers, in an attempt to understand the promises and shortcomings of temporary housing as a response to this urgent social challenge. The installation explores questions of efficiency and affordability but also wonders whether temporary architecture can provide the dignity that people need to feel at home. And on a broader scale, what does it mean for housing when flexibility becomes the defining principle of housing policy?
