Future Studio Oostkop
Future Studio Oostkop is a workspace at the Nieuwe Instituut open to anyone interested in contributing to the spatial future of the Netherlands through design research – whether focused on street, district, city, region or country, or for today, tomorrow or later. Future Studio Oostkop is an initiative of the Board of Government Advisors and the Nieuwe Instituut in collaboration with the Architectuur Instituut Rotterdam (AIR), International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR), the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) Creative Industries Fund NL and the Deltametropolis Association.
The topics explored can include, for example, the future of mobility or care in the city, green areas in neighbourhoods, floor risk management on a regional level or spatial visions on a national scale.
Designers and creative professionals, as well as representatives of government and social, educational and cultural institutions, are actively invited to work together on the spatial future of the Netherlands. The National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning, managed by the Nieuwe Instituut, is available as a source of research, inspiration and reflection.
Designing the Netherlands
Future Studio Oostkop emerged from the exhibition Designing the Netherlands: 100 Years of Past & Present Futures which was on display at the Nieuwe Instituut in 2023-2024. This exhibition, a collaboration with the College of Government Advisors, was an ambitious undertaking to inspire the public, designers and policy makers to develop a new vision for the design of our country. There was a great deal of interest, not only in terms of visitor numbers and press coverage, but also in terms of the many discussions, group visits and tours with numerous government bodies, designers and (educational) institutions. We want to continue that energy and ambition with Future Studio Oostkop.
