Temporary House of Home
Antiques affirm our connection with the past, but does that also apply to 'vintage'? Or is the connection with the past severed in the case of vintage? Is vintage the expression of a permanent NOW and do our domestic interiors therefore express only the here and now?
A quick check on Marktplaats and eBay reveals how an almost forgotten designer can suddenly become completely contemporary, as is now the case with J.J.M. Hoogervorst. Having trained as an architect, Hoogervorst turned to design and in the 1950s and '60s his Interdesign studio worked with the Almelo-based lighting manufacturer Anvia. The lamps they produced are once again highly coveted and the price of an authentic Hoogervorst is skyrocketing. What does this say about our idea of history, and what does the desire for vintage objects mean for our contemporary interiors as well as for the field of product design?
