We have become increasingly aware that our homes and our cities are inhabited not only by humans, but also by animals, insects, microbes, and even AI systems. Together, we are part of one huge ecosystem. But what might this mean for our homes, where the front door is often the final arbiter of what may enter and, more especially, what must be kept out?

Where the Wild Things Are

We like to cosy up to nature, even if it only involves putting in a sliding door to optimize our view of the garden, or by getting a cat or a dog as pet. But nature that has been tamed and subjected to our need for order soon becomes merely charming, boring and predictable. The fact is that we have a romantic yearning for nature that is wild, untamed, and moderately unpredictable. What would it feel like if nature were to invade our safe spaces and threaten to overwhelm us? What if the sliding door turned out to be the glass wall of a human terrarium?
