Cooking programmes are nearly as old as television itself. Their popularity has not waned, and it seems that the pandemic has only added to their popularity. Countless kitchens have been opened, especially on social media, by celebrity chefs and well-intentioned amateurs, and we watch almost continuously as they prepare dishes we will never make or eat ourselves.

[Dirty Furniture](http://Dirty Furniture), the highly praised magazine produced by Anna Bates and Elizabeth Glickfield, presents a kaleidoscopic overview of the cooking genre. Their video essay records, among other things, how these programmes have captured changing perspectives and socio-cultural values.
